Could shockwave help your condition?

We assess a range of persistent tendon and soft tissue problems to help you understand your treatment options.

Plantar fasciitis

Heel pain that can make those first steps in the morning difficult.

Achilles tendinopathy

Stiffness and pain in the Achilles tendon, common in runners and active people.

Tennis elbow

Persistent pain on the outside of the elbow that affects daily life.

Calcific shoulder pain

Pain and reduced movement associated with calcium deposits in the shoulder tendons.

Patellar tendinopathy

Knee pain below the kneecap, common in runners and active individuals.

Lateral hip pain (GTPS)

Pain on the outside of the hip that can make walking and lying on your side difficult.

Suitability and the evidence for shockwave vary by condition. We’ll discuss the potential benefits, limitations and alternatives at your assessment. For calcific shoulder pain, we’ll discuss appropriate care and whether specialist referral is needed.

A non-invasive approach

What is focused shockwave?

Focused shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves delivered through the skin to a selected area of tissue.

At Moira Osteopathy, treatment is considered as part of an individual plan for persistent musculoskeletal pain. Your assessment helps us decide whether it is an appropriate option for your condition.

  • Targeted delivery. Focused technology concentrates energy at a selected depth and location.
  • No injections or incisions. Treatment is applied externally using a handheld applicator.
  • Rehabilitation included. We combine treatment with tailored exercises and practical advice.
  • Individual decisions. We explain the expected benefits and limitations before treatment begins.

A better way forward

When is shockwave worth considering?

It may be an option when symptoms persist despite an appropriate course of initial care.

We’ll review your history, examine the affected area and discuss your goals before recommending a treatment plan.

  • Your symptoms have lasted several months.
  • Previous treatment hasn’t fully resolved the problem.
  • Pain keeps returning with activity.
  • You’d like to explore non-invasive treatment options.

What happens during treatment?

A straightforward process, with your goals at the centre.

  1. Assessment

We take a detailed history, assess your condition and confirm whether shockwave is suitable for you.

  2. Treatment

The shockwave application usually takes 10–15 minutes within your appointment. You may feel a tapping sensation and some discomfort as the waves are delivered.

  3. Rehabilitation

We’ll give you tailored advice and exercises to support your recovery and help you return to doing what you enjoy.

Usually well tolerated

You may feel mild to moderate discomfort. The treatment settings can be adjusted to your tolerance.

Little disruption to your day

Many people continue normal day-to-day activities afterwards. We’ll advise you about exercise and any activity adjustments.

Typically 3–6 sessions

The number of sessions varies with the condition, how long it has been present and how you respond.

Understanding the technology

Focused and radial shockwave: what’s the difference?

The two approaches deliver energy differently. We use focused shockwave technology at our Moira clinic.

Radial pressure waves

Pressure waves spread outward from the applicator surface.

Focused shockwave

Acoustic energy is concentrated at a selected focal region.

Treatment depthEnergy is greatest at the applicator surface and reduces with depth. The focal depth can be selected to suit the target tissue and device.
Treatment choiceThe appropriate approach depends on the diagnosis, the treatment settings and the available evidence.

A difference in technology does not mean one approach produces better results for every condition.
